The Backrow Brothers are a musical duo combining the spirit of Appalachia and the soul of the Western Plains into a tasteful balance of tight harmonies and timeless original lyrics. Drawing their roots from a wide variety of genres such as bluegrass, country, pop, jazz, rock, and gospel, they’re propelling tradition into the next generation while building a new style all their own. Composed of Josh Dean on guitar and Braxton Rogers on banjo, the pair met on the streets of Gatlinburg and began harnessing their passion for the music. They soon found themselves on the ‘backrow’ of industry norms, and decided to carve their own path in the name of doing what they love most: entertaining you, the listener.

Braxton Rogers

A military brat from Lawton, Oklahoma, Braxton Rogers shares his award winning banjo skills. Unlike most bluegrass musicians, he was not raised with the traditional bluegrass sound. At age 10 his grandpa introduced him to the roots of today’s music through old TV shows, such as the Beverly Hillbillies, Hee Haw, and The Andy Griffith Show. There he fell in love with the sound of the banjo and for his 13th birthday was gifted a banjo by his parents. It wasn’t until a year and half later when Braxton went to the Banjo Fest at the Banjo Museum in Oklahoma City where his passions took flight. There he met his soon to become teacher and mentor, Gary “Biscuit” Davis. After a year and a half of lessons Braxton Rogers began his journey as a professional musician. Starting as a solo act with the city funded program Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Braxton has since taken his talents everywhere from North Carolina to Colorado and performed on stages like Dollywood, Silver Dollar City, IBMA, SPBGMA, Merle Fest, and The Boones Creek Opry in Johnson City, Tennessee. He continues to warm hearts with his joyful personality, welcoming attitude, and love for the Lord.

Josh Dean

On guitar and mandolin, Josh Dean is a 21 year old singer/songwriter from the foothills of Greene County, Tennessee. Having grown up in Appalachia, he’s no stranger to the tradition of mountain harmonies and soulful picking. Drawing on that heritage along with artists such as John Prine, Jimmy Martin, and Johnny Cash, he began to twist those influences into songs of his own, writing his stories of home, life, and love. He began singing throughout the region, including Songwriting Rounds at The Jonesborough International Storytelling Center and The Down Home in Johnson City, Tennessee. After a chance encounter with the FFA, he was propelled onto the national level, performing his original song “Blue Jacket,” in Lucas Oil Stadium for the National FFA Convention. He picked up a love for performing that night that has carried him to stages from coast to coast and across the nation, including Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where he met Braxton and began to form a musical collective known as The Backrow Brothers.
